Very nice, kinda small

Review by: Scott , Somerville, United States

I've stayed at many hotels in New York over the past few years. They are all, without exception, tiny. Gem Chelsea was no exception - if my wife had come with me, I doubt we could have both fit in the tiny room. But aside from space issues, the hotel was lovely. Fantastic location - quiet tree lined street, but very close to the subway, with plenty of local restaurants and grocery stores, and just a short walk to the Chelsea gallery district. The rooms and bathrooms were smartly designed and the staff was friendly. I'm usually in town to look at art, and if I'm traveling alone, I'd definitely stay there again. Although if my wife comes with me next time, I might need to find a slightly larger place.

It was nice

Good value for 1 year old botique hotel. Room was 8 x 8, which didn't give much room to walk around the bed with the luggage in the way, typical for NYC. If you are a large person you might want to think about an upgrade. Nice bathroom with high end fixtures. Staff was nice & courteous. Room was clean & location was excellent for us. I would go back.

Nice and clean but small

Overall, I would recommend the Gem Chelsea. It was located in a very central area, makes many of Manhattan's neighbourhoods very accessible. The staff was friendly and helpful. Room was clean, modern but very small. If you don't plan on spending much time in your hotel, then there's very little to complain about. There is a business station with free use of computers/internet/printing.

There are other Gem hotel locations around Manhattan.

Gem Hotel Chelsea

I would recommend this hotel only if location was the key consideration. The rooms are the smallest I've ever seen. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if they were better organized and appointed. There's just not enough surface area for personal effects, toiletries etc.. and not nearly enough room to hang up even a two-day wardrobe for two people.

The front desk tried to give us a room with a double bed even though our reservation specified queen, claiming all other rooms were occupied. Only after I insisted did they "discover" one more queen room. Mmmmm.

About $550 for two nights makes this a moderately priced hotel, but more expensive than a much larger and luxurious room at a Hilton booked through a discounter.

The Gem does seem clean and generally well-managed.
