I would definitely recommend this hotel to everyone! It's small , but has a cool vibe. Also, a great location that's a couple blocks from Union Square. I've stayed in the square and it gets too crowded with tourists. The hotel also has complimentary house wine from 5-7 pm. The staff was really nice too!
FYI - there's a cool bar next door called Cantina that makes awesome drinks and a diner on the corner that stays open late for late night munchies!
Best hotel I've stayed at in SF and I will make sure to stay here every time I visit, which is quite often!!

Friendly, clean, and conveniently located to Union Square and China town--and BART.

Great location, bar very quaint, but very loud when the theater players are in attendance.

First point is that this hotel was good value for San Francisco - therefore we weren't expecting too much from the Rex Hotel. When we arrived the front desk staff were friendly and helpful. The room was, as expected, rather small (it was a 1 bed king with a view to the front of the hotel from the 5th floor). However, the decor is original, the room was reasonably well appointed and the bathroom was clean with a decent shower.
We used the attached Cafe Andree once for dinner and once for breakfast. The dinner was good (fish and steak dishes) but the beakfast was poor. We opted for a continental - $9 each bought a glass of juice and some tea/coffee, a bowl of fruit and one small, soggy croissant. We didn't want a huge meal but it would have been nice if the croissants were edible and if the fruit was perhaps fresher (e.g. no rotten grapes). We were disappointed.
Otherwise Hotel Rex has a lot to offer for the city visitor who wants a centrally located place from which to explore.
