I guess that most hotels in downtown have small rooms so I don't know if I would knock it for that. It did smell old and musty in the hall ways. I asked for a room with double beds and it was indicated on my confirmation but when I got there, the staff informed me that it was indicated as a request and not a guarantee. I found that to be misleading. They proceeded to tell me that it was my responsibility to call the hotel to make sure that my request was met. I didn't think that was very customer service oriented. They did not even offer to compensate me for the mix up. One positive note was that the beds were comfortable and the staff was helpful in getting us on the correct forms public transportation to reach our destinations. It was a good value for the money. |

Absolutely recommend this hotel. We stayed in this hotel two years ago (when it was known as the Cartwright Hotel). It is still brilliant and so are the staff. The bed, after spending six weeks on rock hard mattresses in Europe, was just divine. We requested a room at the back of the hotel this time, because of the noise of the cable cars heard from hotel front rooms and so was much quieter. Free internet service available and happy hour at 5.30pm. Perfect location too - close to Union Square. |

We stayed at this hotel because our favourite was already booked. This one was under major renovation (which they did not tell us about) with surprisingly minimal inconvenience and with the a.m. coffee and p.m. ambience of wine and chatting with other guests.. Both morning and evening consierge were almost obsesssive in their attention. And, I stepped outside to check the weather and a young couple walked by and stopped and looked in the window and the women said 'is this the Cartwright? they have totally redone it, it was such a dump'. Obviously they were locals. If you are looking for a good location at a reasonable price, small rooms, no business services but ok for a casual visit I would recommend it. I own a large share of a much higher end hotel elsewhere and found the 'personal/professional touch' here great. |

I would definitely recommend this hotel for the value and service. Unfortunately we were there with the construction and banging, HOWEVER....everything else made up for it. Best location, wonderful staff and the rooms were great! |

I would recommend this hotel to others, however, it was under renovation and will be for some time. The work is noisy, and if I had known about it prior to booking, I would have gone with a different hotel. |
