Reviews of Hotel Metropolis San Francisco

Review by: Ben, Athens, United States

I've stayed in this hotel twice. It's very simple, clean and centrally located. The staff at very helpful and courteous. It is a slightly long walk if you are attending a conference at Moscone, however it's great if you are interested in the union square area. As a plus, being so close to Market St. it is easily accessible by bart/muni/bus. Farmerbrown, the restaurant that shares the first floor with the hotel, is quite good and worth going to even if you weren't staying at the hotel.

On top of all this is seems to be one of the best deals in the downtown area.

If you're spending most of your days at the Moscone Convention Center, this is a very good price choice. It's a refurbished older building, so it's missing modern details like a vent in the bathroom, or a public restroom in the lobby (it shares bathrooms with the Farmer Brown's restaurant adjacent). The staff was very nice and helpful throughout the whole week, and the furnishings were very comfortable. The coffee/tea in the mornings was nice, but the "wine tasting" options on the weekends left a lot to be desired. I have read others complain about the nearby homeless population, but that is true no matter where you stay in downtown San Francisco due to the methadone clinics, and proximity to the Tenderloin area. The trade-off is central access to the conventions, museums, cable cars, and all public transportation options. We thought the trade was worth it.

This was a great choice for New Years Eve: excellent value, fine location (1 block from Nordstrom, 3 blocks from Union Sq), decent and comfortable rooms, helpful staff. I will certainly stay here again.

However, the location is not for the faint of heart or those uncomfortable in big USA cities, with some sketchy (though likely harmless) street-life characters in the neighborhood.

We would surely recommend it to others. Great bargain hotel near downtown. It was clean, the room was a bit small (think european), but the bathroom had some poor detail work. For instance the build quality in the bathroom, tilework, didn't seem very professional.
For the price and location it is great though.

We arrived late and the only room left was on the second floor facing a dingy street with a wall of grafitti on the opposite building. Room nice though.
Next day asked to be moved higher or to other side of building. Very accommodating staff. Got room on top floor facing city view, very lovely and comfortable.
